Here are short guidelines to follow:

1) Your promos must stir some emotion in the listener (e.g., fear, anger, happiness).

2) Contain enough info and without giving a lot away.

3) Mention the time and date.

### Drop-ins

They are short clippings from TV programs, songs or movies.

**For example:**

Here is Arnold  Schwarzenegger saying,  _"I will be back."_

Vox pop is a term derived from the Latin phrase, “vox populi,” which means “Voice of the people.”

These short audio segments feature replies to one-question interviews from randomly selected respondents.

They last for 1 to 2 minutes and support the news or interviews.

Why do vox pops? Listeners also want to hear the opinions of the ordinary person on the street.

Like selecting a portion of it and applying audio effects such as reverb, phaser, high pass or low pass filter and more! 

You can also import audio, MIDI, labels or raw data. The program even allows you to edit the metadata of your file. 

What's more, it can analyze your track for clipping or silence.

Generally, Audacity combines top-notch features, excellent user experience and will be sufficient for your recording needs.

## **Adobe Audition CC**

Audition CC is part of Adobe's Creative Cloud. 

It's a handy program for creating, editing, mixing, repairing and restoring audio. And it's a powerful tool for creating your studio's imaging. 

First-time users get seven days to try Audition CC. But first, you've to set up the Creative Cloud App, create an account and sign in. 

Then, you can download Audition CC through the Cloud App. Be very patient as the program installs. In my case, it took more than 30 minutes. 

So 30 minutes later, I launched CC and got stuck trying to figure out how to record.

**How to record in adobe audition:**

Here a short guide that will help you get started speedily:

Select File > New Multi-track Session.  Now, if you're recording a podcast, select the podcast template as shown below:

Next, Arm for Record by clicking R and set your audio input device. Finally, to start recording, press the red record icon.

Top 4 audio recording programs for your radio shows

"Should I script my radio shows?"

I'd say yes because:

- You will have more control over the content.
- You may forget what you planned to say.
- You establish structure and maintain the flow.
- You'll have the drive to research and rehearse.

Well, most of the spoken content on the radio is first written down and scripted.

So—let's delve into how to write great radio scripts:



First things first:

Scripts can plan out the basic audio elements of radio shows. Your script can include:

- **Spoken word -** You can write down the dialogue in advance or allocate an ad-libbed segment —adlibbing entails speaking with no prior written script
- **Music Tracks -** You may pre-select and arrange music tracks, for instance, specifying the track to follow a call-in segment or ad break. 
- **Sound effects and radio imaging** - The script can incorporate radio imaging items, ads, promos, sound effects, etc..


Next, let's look at the types of radio scripts. 

## Types of radio scripts

### a. Rundown script, fact sheet, or timeline

The timeline arranges segments or entire shows chronologically. It defines how they are ordered during the broadcast. You should allocate enough time for each entry.

General rundown scripts can be prepared for the entire day. Specific rundowns are used for individual shows.

Here is a simple illustration of a rundown script:

- **07:00 hrs:** Intro of the Morning Breakfast Show (5 minutes)

- **07:05 hrs:** Morning Weather and Traffic Update (10 Minutes)

- **07:15 hrs:** Talk segment with Morning Hosts (10 Minutes) 

- **07:25 hrs:** Music Segment - Two Tracks + Station ID (10 Minutes)

- **07:35 Hrs:** First Ad Spot

### b. Semi-scripts

Also called semi-complete scripts, you can prepare semi-scripts for shows that call for some ad-libbing or improvisation. 

The script will contain hard-coded segments where the host reads from the script.

For instance...

In a radio interview or panel game show, you can script the intro, outro, and talk segments. You can define the radio imaging and sound effects. Your script should also allocate time for guests to respond to questions.

### c. Full scripts

Full scripts are detailed, and you'll read them word by word.

You can also add other script elements such as sound effects and music tracks. 

### d. Music radio scripts

You can prep a script for a music program, for instance, a top 40 countdown.

In between tracks, you can script links as well.

Research exciting bits of info about the track or artist. Like the artist's birthday, how many pets they have, the latest news about them, etc.

It's best practice to keep links between one minute to one minute, thirty seconds.

### e. Spoken word/talk radio scripts

These scripts are meant for spoken-word radio formats like news, magazine programs, documentaries, interviews, announcements, and commentaries. 

## How to write an excellent radio script

### 1. Know your listeners in-and-out

The first question to ask is: "Who I'm I talking to?"

People driving off to work from 6 am to 9 am in the morning? Stay at home parents tuning-in from 10 am to 3 pm?

Understand the desires, goals, ages, likes, dislikes, and pain-points of your listeners. It's the first step to creating a radio script that speaks to them.

Ensure that you have a series of messages and key points that you want to convey.

By effectively connecting with your listeners, you stir their emotions. You may induce feelings of happiness, inspiration, exhilaration, and more. 

Listeners who are fired up can do your bidding like supporting a cause, purchasing a product, visiting your website, or calling-into the studio!

Keep these factors in mind when evaluating your potential listeners: 

- What do they expect from your radio show? Are they tuning in for the entertainment or education value?
- Does your script align with their expectations?
- If you were the listener, would you stick around till the end? If not, make your script more fascinating. 
- Is your script using the same lingo and words that your target listeners use? 

### 2. If you feel overwhelmed, prepare an outline

The thought of writing a 2000 word radio script may overwhelm you.

Surmount this fear by preparing an outline. For instance: 

**Morning In-Studio Interview**

**Intro** 

Play Station ID + morning show jingle

[Duration: 30 seconds]

**Welcome listeners**

Introduce the show and the special guest. Tell listeners what to expect (exciting interview questions)

[Duration 90 seconds]

**Body**

Question one: Ask about family background, place of birth, etc.

Question two: Professional background, first job, etc.

[Duration 5 minutes]

Armed with an outline, carry out your research to fill in any knowledge gaps.

### 3. Sound natural and conversational 

Write the way [you speak. ](https://www.cloudrad.io/radio-voice/)A well-written script, read word by word, should be invisible to the ear.

Your script has to sound natural and relaxed. Now, how can you make it conversational?

Simple:

Read your radio script aloud after writing it. If you catch your breath in the middle of a sentence, shorten the sentence. 

Watch out for words that are hard to articulate. Ensure your listeners understand the meanings behind the words you use, and go with simple words to pass the message more clearly.

After preparing the script, you can also designate someone to edit and improve it. 

If you can't find someone to help, just put your script in a text-to-speech program, for instance, the [Microsoft Word text-to-speech feature](https://support.office.com/en-us/article/use-the-speak-text-to-speech-feature-to-read-text-aloud-459e7704-a76d-4fe2-ab48-189d6b83333c).

Have it read back to you. 

*Tip: Take advantage of free online tools like the [Hemingway Editor](http://www.hemingwayapp.com/) that highlights complex sentences.

### 4. Simplify your script

Cut out unnecessary words by shortening your sentences. Ensure that you're not repeating yourself over and over again. 

Listeners get bored quickly.

They are also impatient, and you must hook them as soon as possible by placing fascinating information at the beginning.

### 5. Pay attention to the rhythm 

Create rhythm and flow in your radio script. 

Use long sentences to elaborate on an idea, pass a message, or make a convincing argument. Long sentences are relaxed and get people thinking.

Short sentences add tension and drama. 

### 6. Let your personality shine to connect with the listener

You can't force people to listen to you. It's through your words that you can win them over. 

Let your personality shine. So are you tough, compassionate, strong, funny, or personable? Infuse the script with personality. 

Address the listener directly using the word "YOU." It's also expedient to use "our" and "we."

Use anecdotes and jokes in your radio script to [become more entertaining.](https://www.cloudrad.io/listener-engagement/)

Tell listeners about your day-to-day experiences. What you had for breakfast can be a fascinating topic.

Don't hold back any personal stories that your listeners can relate to. Little by little, win your audience over with tidbits from your world. 

### 7. Write down your ideas wherever inspiration strikes

Creating a radio script is a creative process.

You need to generate [great ideas](https://www.cloudrad.io/radio-show-ideas/). Make witty observations, jokes, etc.

Your best ideas show up at unexpected times like as you brush your teeth before bed. 

So, it helps to have a notebook. If you don't fancy writing on paper...

Your smartphone has an app to take notes. There are more feature-rich note-taking apps on the app store.

### 8. Write, write & write

You won't become a radio script guru just by reading this article. 

*I secretly wish you could.*

The path to becoming a radio or podcast script genius starts by putting these tips into practice and writing many drafts.

You'll get better by editing, revising, and performing. With time, you'll know what works.

There will be an improvement in your shows. Coming up with a written radio script will become effortless and natural.

### I still don't like the idea of scripting my radio or podcast show!

In this case: 

Work on your improvisation/ad-lib skills. Improvisation is a skill that you can master. 

There are online classes for becoming better at improvisation or becoming funny. 

I also recommend preparing a rundown script to serve as general guidance.

8 Tips on How to Write a Radio Script

Would it be awesome to create radio promotions & contests that go viral and draw many new listeners for your radio?

In this post, we talk about how to create successful radio promos.

I've included two brilliant radio promos you can learn from:

**_Have_** _**your ducks in a row and l**__**_et’s go..._**_

## What are radio promotions?

Well, they are not  [advertisements for businesses!](https://www.cloudrad.io/write-radio-ad/)

Rather, they are creative forms of self-promotion that you can use to make your radio more popular with your listeners.

For instance, holding a last person touching car contest, where the last person left touching a car wins it.

You can also call them promos, giveaways, or  [contests.](https://www.cloudrad.io/radio-contest-ideas/)  The baseline is—they will help grow your audience.

So, what are the steps of creating a radio promotion?



### **1. Come up with an idea**

You can look at what others have done.

Put your unique twist to previous ideas and generate fresh, fun and engaging promos.

**_You can also:_**

a) Think about what people need

b ) What you want to accomplish

—Here is an example of thinking about your listeners' needs:

Not everyone can afford Christmas presents.

A relevant radio promotion might involve asking listeners to share reasons why they can’t afford presents this holiday season.

Then create a contest where the winner walks away with a shopping voucher.

Secondly, you can also use promos to accomplish goals.

_**Promoting your radio app?**_

Do you have a [radio app](https://www.cloudrad.io/radio-station-app/), but can't get listeners to install it?

Offer listeners who download and use your app a chance to win money or other prizes.

**_Need more likes and comments on_** [**_social media_**](https://www.cloudrad.io/social-media-radio-stations/)**_?_**

Create a post...and reward people who share the post on their public profile or tag a number of their friends.


### **2. Put a plan in place**

It’s a little obvious—but you ought to put a plan in place to execute your idea.

And—it helps to start early.

If Christmas is three months away, waiting till the end of November to come up with a radio promotion will equal less time for proper execution.

So whip up a creative team—if you may—to brainstorm great topics even months before you create the actual promo.

This is also the stage to think about sponsors.

**For instance:**

You can partner with a wine store to create a  [radio series](https://www.cloudrad.io/radio-show-topics/) about wine.

Then at the end of the series, a lucky listener may win a year's supply of free wine or a trip to a vineyard.

As you plan, consider the mechanics of the radio promotions:

-   How will listeners participate?
-   Who will select the winners?
-   What are the contest rules?
-   Are prizes transferable?
-   Is the contest open to only one member per household?

Document your plan of action. And over the coming months or weeks hold meetings to discuss and work on your radio promo.



### **3. Create and deploy**

Right before you run your promo, a good idea would be getting everyone including the presenters on board.

And testing out the delivery before you get it on-air.

Awesome! For the other section of this article, I'll show you two great radio contests that made radio history:

## **The Last Contest**

The Last Contest, a giveaway that aired on KCBQ radio in 1972, got me excited.

It was a really creative radio promotion that you can listen to here:

There were hundreds of prize packages with unique gifts.

In sixty seconds, Jack McCoy would tell listeners what each package contained. For instance:

-   Prize package 158, had a 1972, 246GT Dino Ferrari.
-   Price package 179, was a brand new Santana sailing yacht.
-   Price package 201, included flying lessons, a helicopter, and a Cessna airplane.

In total, the price packages were worth 87 million dollars.

I can only imagine what it felt like as Jack described the contents of each package and listeners even from rival stations tuning into KCBQ to cash in.

After 13 days of running the promo, they chose the random secret number.

The lucky winner selected the prize package 158 *with the Ferrari.

Due to the sheer volume of calls on the final day, a 1/3 of San Diego's telephone system was out for thirty minutes.

## **Win a Baby  
**

In 2011, Ottawa's hit music station —The New Hot 89.9 FM—ran the "Win a baby" contest.

To win couples had to explain in 100 words or less, why they deserved to win a baby.

It generated lots of buzz around the world along with some controversy.

Those against the radio content argued that it was outright unethical!

Well, they weren't giving out a baby per se.

The lucky couple would get $35,000 worth of fertility treatments.

And the best part:

Not only did the contest become legendary because of some nifty phrasing and some attention-grabbing images—the station shed light on the plight of couples struggling with infertility.

In 2017, WXKB, a Florida FM radio station ran the same promo giving out free IVF treatments.

The winning couple had been trying to have a baby for the last five years.

## 1. Listeners have to follow the station’s schedule vs. People choosing when to listen

Catching a [radio show](https://www.cloudrad.io/radio-show-ideas/)  (either live or pre-recorded) requires that you tune in as it's airing.

The radio station (Internet, AM, or FM) sets the schedule for its programs.

For instance, if the morning drivetime show airs from 6 am – 10 am, listeners have to turn on their radios during this time, or the content is gone forever.

Well, that’s true…

...unless the radio station records its breakfast show and makes it available on their website as an archive.

What is an archive?

A radio archive is an exact recording of the live programming.

Listeners have the freedom to choose when to listen to podcasts. The audio podcast is always online waiting to be downloaded or streamed.

But can a podcast be live?

Yeah, some podcasts are live.

The podcast creator will broadcast the show to live listeners, while also recording it.

In this respect, a live podcast is very similar to an internet radio show or webcast.



## 2. Public performance rights vs. Reproduction and distribution rights

Three essential rights protect musical works:

-   Reproduction right
-   Distribution right
-   Public performance right.

When a station plays mainstream music, it pays a fee called a royalty to Performing Rights Organizations, e.g., the ASCAP on behalf of the copyright holder.

So what qualifies as a public performance?

Good question.

It is performing music to a gathering of people. Your close friends and family don’t count as the public.

Playing music on radio or TV constitutes a public performance.

What if a radio station decides to repackage its morning drive show as a podcast?

**“They have to remove the music.”**

Simply because downloading involves making copies of the copyrighted content.

Without the reproduction and distribution rights from the copyright holder, this constitutes infringement.

PROs handle public performance licensing. But to get reproduction and distribution rights, podcast creators have to seek permission from the songwriter and music publisher directly.

Rather than take this hard route, podcast creators commission original music from musicians and get all the permissions from the artist.

However, this will be independent music, and not the mainstream or “hits” played on the radio.



## 3. Radio has a strict schedule vs. Setting your format

Radio stations adhere to format clocks or schedules, where program elements such as music, news, or weather are allotted fixed time slots.

This helps listeners know what to expect when they tune in to a particular radio.

Nevertheless, small stations can make money with advertisements.

Non-commercial radios like community stations get most of their funding from well-wishers.

Not-for-profit radios may run ads, but they will be in less frequency than in commercial radios.

Here are several guidelines to help you create and sell your merchandise successfully: 

- Do market research to find out if your products will have ready buyers. 
- Produce small quantities first to know what your buyers prefer.
- Ensure that you can sustain this business venture by considering your profits and expenses. 
- Make products you would also use. 

### Which kinds of merchandise can you sell? 

Branded bags, hoodies, tees, iPhone cases, laptop skins, posters, mugs, stickers, mousepads, etc.

### Where can you sell or market your merchandise?

So let's start:



## **1. Use quality music**

Online radio stations are 100% digital.

It’s not possible to add or subtract anything from the stream you send to your radio server without re-encoding it.

Our servers receive a bunch of 0s and 1s.

We return those 0s and 1s in the same order to your listeners.  
So…

## **2. Choose a suitable bitrate for your codec/format**

MP3 and AAC are two of the most popular codecs used by internet radio stations. But, which one should you use? Well…

AAC was designed to replace MP3. So naturally, it has excellent stereo quality and sounds better at lower bitrates.

For instance, MP3 128 Kbps and AAC 64 Kbps are both high-quality streams. But…

Since MP3 has been around for a long time, it's supported widely and the obvious choice for most internet radios.

However, AAC is becoming popular too.

### So which should I choose?

Streaming at a higher bitrate requires more bandwidth for you and your listeners.

If the user is on a limited data plan, they may feel a pinch and listen for a shorter time.

## **3. Use the default frequency**

The default frequency for most audio files is 44KHz (44100Hz). It's more than what the human ear can hear.

However, you will find some lower bitrate streams set to lower frequencies like 22KHz.

Don't lose sleep over this!

Its impact on the sound quality is minimal compared to the bitrate.

So, when prompted to specify the frequency as you set up your encoder, choose 44KHZ.



## **4. Ensure that there is no buffering**

Buffering happens when the data cannot be sent fast enough from the source to the server.

Or when the listener’s device cannot receive it quickly enough.

The radio player will then pause because there is no more information to play
It has to wait to acquire enough data to start playing again. The cycle can repeat over and over.

How annoying!

## **5. Eliminate clipping by lowering your encoder volume**

If your source is playing too loud, it will cause clipping.

Clipping is when the source volume is so loud that all the information no longer fits in the stream causing bits and parts to go missing.

We recommend lowering the volume of your encoder.

Your listeners will receive a better stream, and they can control the volume on their end.

No one likes a stream that SHOUTS at them, even more, if they forgot to lower their volume before pressing play.

But it has never happened to you, has it?



## **6. Choosing Mono Vs. Stereo**

There are two main reasons to use Mono.

First, your radio is a talk show, so you don't need the stereo effect.

Second, you want to broadcast at a very low bitrate (<32 Kbps).

Although stereo uses a little bit more data, at low bitrates, it can improve your sound quality.

Otherwise, yes to stereo...



## **7. No dead air**

It will take careful planning to ensure you have no dead air on your stream.

Most professional broadcasters know it's the worst thing that can happen.
