Listener Protection

1 min read Last updated: October 08, 2026

Listener protection sets rules for who can connect to your stream. The rules apply to your HLS and ICY streams on every CloudRadio edge. Changes save automatically and take effect within a minute.

Listener protection is available on CloudRadio One and Custom plans, to the owner and station managers.

Go to Settings in the left sidebar and open the Listener protection tab.

Country rules

Under Where listeners can tune in, pick one:

  • Everywhere: no country rule.
  • Only these countries: listeners outside the countries you pick are refused.
  • Everywhere except: listeners in the countries you pick are refused.

Search for a country in Search countries to add and click it to add it. Until you pick at least one country, everyone can tune in.

Location comes from the listener's IP address, so a VPN user counts as the VPN's country. Some connections have no known country, such as satellite links, some mobile carriers and privacy relays. Locations we can't identify decides whether they are allowed (Allow) or refused (Refuse).

Use country rules to keep your stream to the territories you hold rights for.

Maximum listening session

Maximum listening session ends a session after a set time, from 1 hour to 24 hours, or No limit. After the Cooldown (1 minute to 1 hour), the listener can press play again. This stops a player left running in an empty room from counting as a listener all day.

Connections per IP address

Connections per IP address limits how many players one address can run at the same time, from 2 to 25, or No limit. Schools, offices and mobile networks share one address, and an iPhone uses two connections for one player, so keep this generous.

Block stream rippers

Turn on Refuse recording tools to refuse known recording tools (Streamripper, StreamWriter, Audials, yt-dlp, wget) and clients that send no player name at all.

Some older hardware radios send no player name. If a listener reports being refused, turn this off.
